I’ve spent most of the last day or two trying to research the possibilities on long-term travel. Most of it is speculative at this point, but the main sticking point will likely be the house I think. It’d be nice to not pay the mortgage and have that covered (and perhaps even make some fun money) while I’m gone. You’d think a three-bedroom, newly remodeled house would rent for at least $3k a month, which would be a nice chunk of change. Between the mortgage, potential property management costs, and some occasional repairs that that’d basically be a wash at the end of the day, but that’s really all I’d want for a year of travel. But hey, if we can get more than that, then that’d be sweet. I bet there’s a market out there for empty-nesters wanting a nice, fully-furnished home in a nice area like that.

Then there’s the whole question of the visa, if I wanted to do a significant amount of time in Japan. I’d have three months there without a visa, but if I wanted to go any further than that, then I think my current options would be (1) find a job, (2) go to language school, or (3) find some way to qualify whatever it is I’m doing by then as a personal business and get a business/investor visa. The feasibility of that is perhaps up in the air at the moment, but even just knowing those options are available would be wonderful to know. I’m aware that some people do the whole song and dance of staying for ninety days, going elsewhere for a bit and then returning for 90 more days etc., but I’m not sure how well that would fly.
